Pastoral Jottings

Since last year I have been the church link with the uniformed groups and every now and again I call in to see what they are doing. In the past two weeks I have been to see Rainbows, Cubs and Scouts.

The Rainbows had a guest speaker who brought along a wide range of animals including some spectacular creepy crawlies. The youngsters were captivated by the talk and demonstrations and there were an amazing number of up close and personal encounters when very brave Rainbows handled the creatures. There was very good support from parents who were also showed interest but from a greater distance. I made my exit before the snake appeared!

I went to Hatton Campsite to meet the Cubs and Scouts on a lovely sunny evening. The cubs were taught how to build and light a campfire using paper, cotton wool and a variety of small twigs. A flint and steel were used to create sparks to ignite the cotton wool and paper before adding increasingly larger pieces of wood. All fires were successfully lit – one, amazingly, with the first strike of flint on steel. Everyone had a great time cooking sausages and toasting marshmallows.

The Scouts were taught the safety rules of using knives and axes and then got to work whittling twigs with knives and then cutting some quite substantial logs with axes and saws.

I look forward to visiting the Beavers, Brownies and Guides after half term.

We are so blessed with such a committed and hard working team of leaders who provide such stimulating activities for the youngsters from St Mark’s and the wider community.

The Scouts have just set up a website so take a look at future plans. https://sites.google.com/site/4thleamingtonscouts/

Congratulations to Guy Ashworth the Group Scout Leader who, at the Scouts AGM in May, was presented with a certificate marking five years service.
