Magazine for February 2012
Mothers’ Union
Di Sliwinski,( Diocesan president) and Paul, our Vicar, came to our AGM as we discussed future plans for the branch.
Diana Griffiths presented the Treasurer’s Report and read last year’s minutes. A presentation was then made to Kath Morrissey, as she stepped down after being our Enrolling Member ie Chairman, for the past 12 years.
Diana has agreed to co-ordinate our activities, and we shall be meeting in the Lounge on February 28th at 2 pm.
Last year the Government asked the Mothers’ Union to report on child commercialisation and sexualisation. Here is a VERY brief summary of recommendations:
THE BAILEY REPORT
1 Magazines and newspapers with sexualised images on covers to be not within easy sight of children.
2 Reduced street advertising with sexualised imagery where children are likely to see it.
3 Pre-watershed TV better to reflect what parents expect.
4 Age rating for music videos.
5 Easier for parents to block “adult” material on internet.
6 Retail code of good practice for retailing to children
7 Regulate adverts to reflect parents’ and children’s views
8 No employing children as brand ambassadors - ie for peer pressure.
9 Defining children as under 16.
10 Raise parental awareness of these marketing techniques
11 Quality assurance in media commercial and educational resources
12 Greater transparency in regulation framework; ie one website
13 Easier for parents to express views to businesses re goods and services.
Government to monitor and review implementation in 18 months
