It’s Who you know…

It’s tennis at Wimbledon towards the end of this month, featuring a fantastic new roof on the Centre Court; strawberries and cream;  plenty of sunshine (we hope!); and world-class players.

When top tennis professionals play, it is likely that that each will concentrate on the  weaknesses of the other.  The spectators will see that one player is constantly hitting the ball to the other’s backhand, because of a known weakness – relatively speaking – in that area. Likewise, the other may be introducing  a  drop shot at the net as often as possible to force the opponent to come forward – something which is known to be difficult for that player.

The devil never bothers to attack us at  our strong points.  He looks for weaknesses, and these show up in different ways.  One of these is – doubt.

Many people in the Bible express doubt, especially when facing difficulties. In many Psalms for example, David ponders where God is.  Job accuses God of not having human eyes to see his misery.

God tells a beleaguered Jeremiah: “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

I heard of a chaplain at a University, who often met  students who would say  ‘I don’t believe in God.’  He would invite them to sit down and tell him what kind of God they didn’t believe in, and after listening closely, he would say “What a coincidence! I don’t believe in that God either!”   He would then share his beliefs with them.

Is your God the one and only true God?  Think about this when you next confirm your belief in the words of The Creed.
