Hot Topic Café

A few times a year, the evening service in the Hall gives way to the Hot Topic café.

This is not a church service but an informal gathering to debate a contemporary theme, introduced by a visiting speaker. We serve good coffee with delicious cakes and biscuits in a relaxed atmosphere which suits all tastes. It’s an ideal opportunity to invite friends and neighbours, without the ‘cringe factor’!

The next Hot Topic will be on Sunday 4 March 2012 at 6.30pm in the Hall, when we welcome a speaker from ‘Open Doors’. Details to follow.

On Sunday 13th November 2011 we debated the issues surrounding the protests at St Paul’s Cathedral. Three St Mark’s volunteers spoke on behalf of protesters, bankers and the church.
On June 26th 2011 we welcomed Jonathan Chilvers of the Salvation Army. He introduced the Hot Topic of Homelessness – yes, even in leafy Leamington!

Other topics have ranged from the war in Iraq to the Israel/Palestine question, both addressed by those who had been there – David Banbury served as a chaplain in Iraq and Christopher Lamb spent three months in Israel Palestine with a Quaker organisation.

In 2007 we ran a mini-series on Justice: the speakers were police Superintendant Andy Johnson, prison chaplain Bill Cave and magistrate Andy Shearn. In 2008 the hot topics were as diverse as how democracy works in local government and being a Christian in the workplace.
