Glen Hales

Glen Hales may not be a name known to you but his work is.  He was the builder who for well over 30 years loved and cared for the fabric of St Mark’s far far beyond the call of any ordinary builder; but he was no ordinary man.  Tragically he died while working at St Mark’s on 29 July, shortly before his 73rd birthday.

Glen loved his family, his building trade and his rugby.  In 1962 he founded Whitnash Rugby Club, said to be because he was fed up with never being able to get a regular game at Old Warwickians, a club for whom he had played after leaving Warwick School.

The club moved to Harbury in 1966, becoming Harbury RFC in 1967 and Glen became known as ‘Mr Harbury’ being at various times Secretary, Treasurer, Match Secretary and Chairman before stepping down to make more time for his family.
His funeral at St Joseph’s Whitnash combined a loving tribute to a man who had given so much to many, with a very positive expression of the Christian message of hope, forgiveness and the resurrection..

As you look at our re-pointed church wall remember Glen with thanks, for  St Mark’s benefited from his care beyond measure. We extend our deepest sympathy to his widow Elisabeth and his surviving children Sarah, David and Caroline and four grandsons.
