Followership – a neglected skill!

Fire in Coventry by Stephen Verney tells the story of the Holy Spirit moving throughout the Diocese of Coventry before the consecration of the new Cathedral almost 50 years ago. Across the Diocese clergy and laity were meeting to pray together and were developing a new love for each other.

In Chapter 6 the Rector of Halford speaks of ”an awe-inspiring feeling of gladness that an invisible bond had been created throughout the Diocese”. From one town came the report: “Praying became less difficult …. because those who prayed were aware of the deep and unseen fellowship of which the Cross of Nails was the symbol. The Cross captured the imagination of the people in a remarkable way.”

Fire in Coventry is being republished by the Diocese on 16th June, in the run-up to the Cathedral’s Golden Jubilee in 2012. The book has a new (12 page) introduction from Bishop Christopher. He writes of his hope that “like the story of which it speaks, its message will gradually ripple outwards, embracing more and more people”.
