Amnesty

Founded in 1961, initially as a one-off campaign, Amnesty was the vision of London lawyer Peter Beneson as he sat in St Martins in the Fields reflecting on the fate of three Portuguese students jailed for daring to raise their glasses to freedom.

Today there are over a million members worldwide who by letter writing, campaigning and popping up in public bring hope to those imprisoned for peacefully expressing their political or religious beliefs.  More recently Amnesty has taken more controversial stands, e.g. over abortion, which not all of us agree with.

The local Mid Warwickshire group,
http://midwarwickshire.amnesty.org.uk/,
almost as old as Amnesty itself, and founded in Rugby Road Milverton, concentrates on work for prisoners, meeting in my house on the first Thursday of each month.

If you are interested in joining us do come along to one of our  meetings.
